چکیده

In this paper we show that set-intersection is harder than distance oracle on sparse graphs. Given a collection of total size n which consists of m sets drawn from universe U , the set-intersection problem is to build a data structure which can answer whether two sets have any intersection. A distance oracle is a data structure which can answer distance queries on a given graph. We show that if one can build distance oracle for sparse graph G = (V,E), which requires s(|V |, |E|) space and answers a (2− ǫ, c)-approximate distance query in time t(|V |, |E|) where 2 − ǫ is a multiplicative error and c is a constant additive error, then, set-intersection can be solved in t(m + |U |, n) time using s(m + |U |, n)

Distance Oracles for Stretch Less Than 2

We present distance oracles for weighted undirected graphs that return distances of stretch less than 2. For the realistic case of sparse graphs, our distance oracles exhibit a smooth three-way trade-off between space, stretch and query time — a phenomenon that does not occur in dense graphs. In particular, for any positive integer t and for any 1 ≤ α ≤ n, our distance oracle is of size O(m + n...

Distance Oracles for Sparse Graphs

Suppose you are given a large network, such as the Internet or the US road network. In many practical applications, one might be interested in querying shortest path distances between pairs of nodes of the network. However, attempting to implement a data structure that supports such operations will result either in a large query time, or large space requirement, both of which are undesirable. I...

Face Recognition using an Affine Sparse Coding approach

Sparse coding is an unsupervised method which learns a set of over-complete bases to represent data such as image and video. Sparse coding has increasing attraction for image classification applications in recent years. But in the cases where we have some similar images from different classes, such as face recognition applications, different images may be classified into the same class, and hen...

Faster Approximate Distance Queries and Compact Routing in Sparse Graphs

A distance oracle is a compact representation of the shortest distance matrix of a graph. It can be queried to retrieve approximate distances and corresponding paths between any pair of vertices. A lower bound, due to Thorup and Zwick, shows that a distance oracle that returns paths of worst-case stretch (2k − 1) must require space Ω(n) for graphs over n nodes. The hard cases that enforce this ...
